I purchased a Pegasus, from FSL3D. It is a SLA printer, stereolithography, with a very high details. Seems very promising.

It was promoted in KickStarter, and the delivery is estimated in May.

I'm happy, as they keep us informed regularly about the status of development and they are on schedule. It is great.

I would have loved to backed them on Kickstarter, but was out of money after the Zortrax.  I liked their package they offered with the printer and laser too.  That is the one I really wanted to get.

I'm wondering whether more experienced 3D print users consider a SLA printer a step down the road from FFF (FDM?) printers? i thought about ordering a SLA printer, but thought it would be better to learn about 3D printing by going for a Zortrax first. do you think this is the better way to go?

so my question is: money aside, for someone new to 3D printing, FDM or FFF printer before SLA? Or is this totally down to the requirements of the individual. in that, it is to do with whether one wants a perfect print?

thank you.

i think it is down to your requirements, actually.

But it's cool to have all different technologies too. I will be happy to have both. And both will be used, for sure.

I think the SLA is considered a step down because the hobby machines are newer and have not been refined as much yet.  I think they can offer finer detail than FFF, but the build area is normally smaller.

In the end, it boils down to what you want the parts for.  While FFF is supposed to be for rapid prototyping, a lot of users use it to make parts you can use in everyday life.  There is also a much greater range of materials to use in FFF right now so you can match them to what the part you are making is for.

When Zortrax comes out with the promised updates.  It will be a great machine.  Right now it is a little limited.  What we need is for someone to go ahead and make temp control like they did for th Afinia.  Yes, using switches for temp control is not elegant, but it does work and you can change it at the machine if you want to try the same .stl in different materials.
